Saint Valentine’s Day at Whitesands Bay

A Valentine surprise of luminant blue skies
brightens the sand pitted by the morning’s hailstones.

The tide has fallen, and silhouetted on the shoreline
a lean dog leaps to catch a fluorescent Frisbee.

Our swaddled children paddle through sandy pools and puddles
and search the seaweed-darkened rocks for treasures.

I find a stick and score our names onto the shore,
then surround them with an arrow-pierced heart.

The constant susurration of the distant ocean
reminds me that the sand will be washed clean,

so I run to where you stand, looking out on Ramsay Sound,
and you turn to me with a greeting glance of love.
